The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
