The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
